Week from Friday 3rd July 2026

This is a sparse week food-wise because we had a lot of family things going on but a few notes…

Friday 3rd July 2026

Lunch

I was lunching alone today so I decided to go to Dana, a little vegetarian cafe in Crookes, which is always lovely. I had their avocado and halloumi with tomato salsa on toast. I used to have this every time we went but hadn’t had it for a while. It was really good and I had a side of mushrooms which completed it perfectly.

Saturday 4th July 2026

Lunch

My old favourite cheese and red pepper sandwiches at the hospital today.

Dinner

I picked up a pizza from M&S at the train station on the way home and it was good.

Sunday 5th July 2026

Lunch

I made green soup for lunch using up various vegetables including courgette, spring onion and some spinach. Served with cheese and red pepper sandwiches.

Dinner

One of my fallback dishes for dinner, mushroom and red pepper goulash. Very simple and easy to make but really tasty with rice and soured cream.

Monday 6th July 2026

Dinner

It was a lovely so we took Bingo (our greyhound) out to The Plough Inn at Bradfield to sit in their beer garden. Tom had a veggie burger and I had vegetarian chilli-loaded chips which was very nice but enormous!

Tuesday 7th July 2026

Lunch

We had lunch at Arthur’s Cafe in Mirfield today. I had tabbouleh with sweet potato falafel. The salad was nice but the falafel were a bit disappointing.

Dinner

We have a favourite Prue Leith curry that I make a lot with paneer, peas and spinach (random fact: it was in the last ever issue of Vegetarian Living magazine in May 2020 but it’s also in her book The Vegetarian Kitchen which she co-authored with her daughter). Anyway, I used that as the base recipe but used green beans, mushrooms and spinach instead of the peas and spinach and it worked really well. Served with rice and pickles.

Wednesday 8th July 2026

Lunch

We went to Valencia in Crosspool for lunch today. It’s somewhere we’ve been for dinner a few times and had tapas but they also have a good daytime menu with lots of brunch-y type dishes. I had a Turkish dish called Menemen which was a green pepper and tomato stew served with eggs on top and toast on the side. It was very nice. Tom had the full veggie breakfast.

Dinner

In the evening it was the Crosspool Crawl, an annual race that we’ve done a few times now. It’s a nice low key event with a mixture of road and trail that goes round the Redmires Reservoirs. We joined some friends from our running clue for dinner at the pub afterwards – veggie burgers at The Three Merry Lads.

Thursday 9th July 2026

Lunch

I had some beetroot from the veg box to use so I cubed and roasted them and made them into a salad with beluga lentils, red pepper, cucumber, feta, lemon juice and leaves.

Dinner

We had leftover mushroom, green bean and spinach curry from the other night so instead of serving it with rice again I made Madhur Jaffrey’s sag aloo. My Dad used to make it as part of his curry feasts and it’s a very simple recipe but much tastier than you would expect from the brief ingredients list.

Afterwards I made an Eton Mess style dessert with some raspberry meringues that came in our latest Fabulous Food Finds Tasting Box.

A note about salt

You might have noticed that I rarely mention salt in my recipes. I just don’t use it a lot. I’m sure a lot of people would think my cooking is ‘under seasoned’ but I have to watch my blood pressure and I’m used to not using much. There are some things, like rice, where I add a bit at the table but I rarely add it into my cooking.
